Europe-South East Asia Symposium on Dengue

SEA-EU-NET is organising a scientific workshop which will focus on scientific matchmaking, identifying opportunities for collaboration and forming consortia to bid into the EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7) funding calls.

The workshop will bring together experts on Dengue fever to identify opportunities for collaboration and form consortia to bid into upcoming FP7 funding calls. The workshop will build upon the strong research capacity which already exists in both Europe and South East Asia (SEA), taking an integrated approach to R&D, and focusing on the comprehensive control of dengue fever, especially under changing climatic conditions. The workshop will develop a co-ordinated and joint approach between researchers from different disciplines to develop innovative tools for the prevention, clinical diagnosis and management, and surveillance of the diseases.

Background

Vector borne diseases represent a growing threat to the health of European and South East Asian citizens. The geographical distribution of vector borne diseases is changing and becoming more widespread, and further their incidence increasing. There is a grave potential for these diseases to cause a major and much greater threat to health of both European and South East Asian citizens in the near future. Dengue fever, which is the most efficient re-emerging and expanding pathogen of global importance, is on a sharp rise worldwide. Climate change may increase the risk of Dengue outbreaks in both South East Asia and Europe.

Important determinants of the transmission of vector borne diseases include the ability of the vector or host to survive and reproduce, which is largely determinant on the local climate and environment. Elevated global temperatures will increase the geographical area where vector borne diseases occur and populations suffer.

Significant synergy is expected from uniting EU and SEA researchers from different fields around the common goal of generating new knowledge on these diseases, and delivering improved ways to monitor its spread, diagnose, prevent, control and treat it. The knowledge generated from collaborations between researchers in the EU and SEA is expected to help predict the emergence and spread of new vector borne diseases and assess the efficacy of different interventions and develop new interventions to interrupt or limit the spread of these diseases with the goal of protecting against these threats.

Objectives

1. Scientific matchmaking to form concrete proposals in response to upcoming funding calls within the Health programme of the EC

2. Take stock of existing and planned research projects and identify any issues that could form the subject of future EU-SEA collaborations

3. Identify the specific research needs of each region

Programme

Day 1: Presentations of latest research by speakers from EU and SEA

Open to the public (150 attendees expected)

Day 2: Round table discussion to identify those keen to collaborate and to form a consortia
