The "SEA-EU-NET" initiative was conceived to bolster scientific synergy between Europe and Southeast Asia in a more strategic and cohesive fashion. Initiated in January 2008, this project engages 21 institutions from both regions. This project enhanced the caliber, scope, prominence, and influence of bi-regional Science and Technology (S&T) collaboration between Southeast Asia and Europe.

The SEA-EU-NET initiative underpins the internationalization policy of the EU, aligns with the specific aims of FP7, and contributes to laying the S&T foundation vital for the EU to attain its political, economic, and social ambitions. The project delivered a plethora of measures to amplify SEA-EU cooperation among academic, industrial, and governmental stakeholders. The SEA-EU-NET initiative yielded substantial impacts in the following domains:

• Fostering a bi-regional dialogue between EU and ASEAN S&T policymakers at the Senior Officials level.
• Elevating the profile of FP7 within the Southeast Asian research community and augmenting the participation of Southeast Asian researchers in the FP7 program.
• Conducting comprehensive analytical work on the current state of EU-SEA S&T relations, formulating recommendations on fortifying the relationship, and integrating these insights into the official dialogue process.
• Expanding the dialogue on EU-SEA S&T collaboration to encompass a broader spectrum of stakeholders.
• Linking the project outcomes to other existing and forthcoming ERA-, INCO-NET, and thematic EU-FP projects, thereby facilitating the development of a coherent European-level approach towards international S&T cooperation.

"SEA-EU-NET 2" was a sequel project launched in October 2012 and lasted until April 2017, involving 21 institutions. It was a subsequent initiative designed to enhance scientific collaboration between Europe and Southeast Asia (SEA) with greater strategic depth and cohesion.
